What is menopause?
Menopause is when periods stop due to lower hormone levels. This usually happens between the ages of 45 and 55. It can happen earlier naturally or for reasons such as surgery to remove the ovaries (oophorectomy) or the uterus (hysterectomy), cancer treatments like chemotherapy, or genetic reasons. Sometimes the reason is unknown. It is something that every single woman goes through and is linked with symptoms such as menopausal skin concerns, hot flashes, and mood changes.
What are the 3 stages of menopause?
Generally, menopause is discussed as one overarching concept, but it's actually a three part phase:
Peri-menopause, menopause, and post-menopause.
1) Peri-menopause can begin 8 to 10 years before menopause when the ovaries progressively produce less estragon and can start as young as the 30s.
2) Menopause is the year-long period when a woman doesn't have her menstrual period.
3) Post-menopause comes after menopause and can last for up to a decade or longer.
What are the main skin concerns linked to the menopause?
Some of the common menopausal skin concerns include:
- Dryness – As estragon levels decrease, women will experience increased dryness due to decreased sebum (oil) production.
- Dehydration- As we age, our hyaluronic acid levels (which keep the skin hydrated) decrease, which is why menopause skincare often works to quench the skin.
- Enlarged Pores-Pores will appear larger due to weaker collagen and elastic tissue.
- Acne- Due to hormonal changes, menopausal skin may break out during peri-menopause and menopause.
- Sun- Spots or Age Spots-this is not specifically related to estrogen withdrawal, but rather occurs alongside menopausal skin due to life stage and age.
